Thieves of the Wood

Thieves of the Wood ligger i hjärtat av 1700-talets Flandern och är ett ganska bra perioddrama, även om det faller lite för långt in i melodramatiska vatten mot slutet av serien. För det mesta gör dock showen klokt i att jonglera sin centrala gjutna tecken, med Jan den mest sympatiska ut gäng. Med några gritty grafik och några anständiga produktion design, är detta flamländska drama säkert tillräckligt för att motivera en klocka, även om det är osannolikt att tända perioden drama scenen.

Visserligen vet jag inte så mycket om denna period av historia, vilket är part varför dramat är så tilltalande. I hjärtat av det ligger dock återvändande soldat Jan, som upptäcker att korruption är utbredd i sin hemstad, delvis tack vare de sjuka och fattiga exil till skogarna. Med en tydlig klass klyftan så tidigt fungerar som bränsle för de kommande konflikterna, på andra sidan av stängslet är Baru, en ny fogde angelägna om att ingjuta reformer och förändringar. Den tredje och sista huvudberättelsen kretsar kring Heloise och tillsammans förankrar denna trio av karaktärer i huvudsak dramat till de vanliga troper du förväntar dig.

Det finns antydningar om en Robin Hood-esque tomt på jobbet här och under hela serien de flesta av dramat kretsar kring en väg byggs som fungerar som den springande punkten i konflikten för båda sidor. När serien växer, detta förändras något för att införliva mer romantiska teman men det finns ett par trevliga vändningar sent på att hålla saker intressant. Jag kommer inte att ge för mycket bort men det räcker att säga om du gillar karaktär drama och tvål element, Thieves of the Wood är ett ganska bra alternativ.

Estetiskt åtminstone ser showen bra ut. Det finns en skarp kontrast mellan rika och fattiga här, medvetet utställningsmonter genom extrema närbilder av lera och smuts, medan breda, svepande bilder av påkostade interiörer erbjuder det omvända för de rika. Det är ett subtilt trick, men en som fungerar bra för att förstärka de teman som spelar ut under hela säsongen.

När det gäller kostym och scenografi gör Thieves of the Wood bra och det finns en verklig ansträngning för att göra detta så autentiskt som möjligt. Tidigt finns det en specifik förbannelse ord som används som jag var tvungen att titta upp för att se till att det var passande för tidsperioden, men utöver det, gör serien bra för att hålla saker konsekvent och trovärdigt.

Med anständig grafik och en ovanlig miljö som inte ofta visas upp, thieves of the Wood inte riktigt uppfinna hjulet men gör ett ganska bra jobb att hålla saker engagerande ändå. Om du är på humör för en period drama, är detta ett ganska bra erbjudande och medan jag inte var ett massivt av den romantiska subplot, det finns tillräckligt här för att göra för en alldaglig men ganska solid säsong av underhållning.
